Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Probably the most popular verse in this chapter.  There is a popular song that uses this lyric.  it’s quoted often in sermons.  It’s a reminder of what God did for us, in coming to earth as a man and dying a brutal bloody death – a death we deserved, but he took upon himself.  It’s barbaric.  It’s gory.  It’s painful to imagine.

It’s beautiful…….

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23)

And oh, what a gift!  Do you realize what Jesus Christ endured for you?  Just one sin is enough to separate us from God, for all eternity.  We can’t pay it back.  Now, add up all of your sins, past, present and future.  Then – figure that is the same for everyone else.

Jesus paid it all!  He not only endured the most brutal of turtures, having his flesh torn from his body while being flogged, and a horrible, excrutiatingly painful death on the cross – he also endured condemnation and complete separation from God the Father in heaven.  For all of us.  For everyone one of us who has ever, or will ever, live on this earth until he returns in all his glory!  That is ASTOUNDING to me!  We do not have to endure hell, because of Jesus Christ!

But we must believe with our hearts, and confess with our mouths, “Jesus is Lord”.  We must turn our lives over to him, in order to receive this gift.  For some reason that  is simply too much to bear for many of us.  I ask you, my friend – why????  And I pray you consider just what Jesus Christ did for you, and how much he loves you….

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
