Phil Robertson, Free Speech, And Where Are Our Values?

So – Phil Robertson was suspended from Duck Dynasty, for expressing beliefs that really, nobody should be surprised by.  I mean – he’s a Christ follower, what would you expect?  If asked, he’s going to speak God’s truth.

But I really don’t want to talk about that.  Nor do I want to talk about his “freedom of speech”.  He was free to speak.  He’s not going to jail.  He’s being suspended from a television show, which he’s made millions on.  He’s not in pain.  Heck – I’d be willing to bet he’d gladly give up the show, for the sake of the gospel.  But, I don’t want to talk about that either.

I want to talk about our values, as Christians.  We are getting bent out of shape over this.  For some – SEVERELY bent out of shape.  We are missing God at work!  Read the article in GQ.  Go ahead, read it.

Done?  Good.  I liked it.  Did you?

I liked that Phil was what I see on the show – typical Phil.  Described as a redneck.  But ALSO described as inviting, engaging, more than hospitable, gracious.  This, by a pagan (the writer does not use that word, but does describe himself as a “godless person” at the end).  That to me shows that Phil was showing the love of Christ.

And he SPOKE the truth to this young man as well.  I’m not just talking about the “controversial parts”.  He shared the gospel with him!  Praise God, he’s at work when we aren’t able to see it…..

And – if you read the article, it seems like the writer was stirred up a bit, by the surroundings, by the kindness of Phil and the family, by Phil’s passion for Christ.  Who knows, God can use that.  God can be stirring something in this young man’s heart.  I am praying for this young man.  If nothing else, that is what God had planned.  One man, hearing that knock on the door……

What are you doing right now, as you think of this?

Truth…

This is not meant to offend.  But if it offends, then I pray even in the offense you think about it.  For yourself, if you reject Jesus.  If you love Jesus, then for your family, your loved ones, your co-workers, your neighbor.  This applies to me as well…..
