Did you know that legend has it George Washington turned down kingship in the US of A?  I’d never heard that until very recently.  Now, I say legend, because as I do some “googling”on the topic, I find differing assertions as to whether this was or was not true.  I was not there.  It may not have happened.  Someone smarter than I can prove it’s truth or falsehood.

But legend has it the people (Or some people, or a person…) wanted George Washington to be our king, as we declared our independence.  But our first president turned that down.  Again, someone smarter than I…

I bring it up however, because I find it fascinating that someone would deny this kind of authority, this kind of power.

And I find it fascinating, that we as a people, would WANT to return to the power structure we suffered and died to get away from, we fought so hard to be independent of.  I guess we do what we know?  “Everyone else is doing it”?

When I was in elementary school, I recall being corrected by one of my teachers, as I thought our president was basically our king.  She told me that is not how American government works, that he is not a king.  He’s a servant.  He’s a leader, sure, in a sense.  But that we are not under rule of a king, as other nations are.  This was part of what made us great (Sorry – I know those very words might stir up emotions, good or bad, for some in these times).

So – why do we want a king so badly now?  Why do we look at President Obama as our hope?  Or Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump, or whomever you may want as your “savior” in office?  Why do we want to be like the other nations, so badly?

Why do we forget, WE HAVE A KING.  His name is Jesus.  He rules with an iron scepter (a strong, unbreakable dominion).  It’s not a matter of when this will come to be.  It already is.  JESUS IS LORD.  And – THERE IS FREEDOM in His kingdom!  Christ came to set you free!  You think that was so you can just be put back into bondage?  My dear friend, what has religion taught you?  That’s not what He’s done…

“The Spirit of YAHWEH is on Me,
    because He has anointed Me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free” (Luke 4:18)

But we just… try so hard to reject this, and return to – what we know…

We do what we know.  And that makes me sad…

All the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.  They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to YAHWEH.  And YAHWEH told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their King.  As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.  Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

Samuel told all the words of YAHWEH to the people who were asking him for a king.  He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.  Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.  He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.  He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants.  He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.  Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use.  He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.  When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us.  Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before YAHWEH.  God answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
